Description
Avenue Studios, a location of rich historical significance, is said to be the site of Henry VIII's stables and was later used by Baron Carlo Marochetti, Queen Victoria's favorite sculptor, as his studio and foundry. The studio was also home to other notable artists and sculptors, including Sir Alfred Gilbert, who sculpted Eros, and Sir Edwin Landseer, who cast the lions at the base of Nelson's Column. The space was divided into smaller studios around 1870, and many famous artists, including Charles Lutyens, Joseph Boehm, and John Singer Sargent, lived and worked there. The Suffragettes even operated a secret press from the cellar of number 5. The enclave, known as Sydney Place, is named after Viscount Sydney, a trustee of Henry Smith's Charity.
