Dering Lodge Wood is a stunning example of ancient woodland, set within a Local Wildlife Site and part of the larger Dering Wood. The site features large areas of hornbeam coppice with oak standards, as well as birch, poplar, ash, holm oak, and hawthorn. The woodland has two large woodbanks lined with hornbeam coppice and is home to numerous clearings, natural water sources, and an abundance of wildlife, including deer. The site is covered by a woodland tree preservation order and an Article 4, which allows for normal forest management under a Forestry Commission-approved plan. The woodland has a rich history, having been visited by Edward VII and his mistress, and is set in a desirable location between the villages of Smarden and Pluckley, with easy access to the M20 and London. The woodland is accessible on foot only via the Pluckley Road or a public footpath, and viewing is welcome, but visitors are advised to take care due to the potential hazards of the great outdoors.
